O pré-show do VMA 2022 começou neste domingo (28) com Saucy Santana, atração no mês de agosto para o programa MTV Global Push Artist. O novato apresentou os singles Too Much e Booty, que é uma parceria com a rapper Latto e possui sample de Crazy in Love de Beyoncé. O namorado de Anitta, o produtor musical Murda Beatz, ficou responsável por agitar o pré-show com um remix com os maiores hits do ano.
Em seguida, Yung Gravy cantou com seu hit Betty (Get Money), que contém sample da icônica Never Gonna Give You Up, grande sucesso de Rick Astley. Por fim, o pré-show deste ano, terminou com a cantora e atriz Dove Cameron, que venceu Artista Revelação, apresentou as canções Boyfriend e Breakfast.
Jack Harlow abriu o VMA com First Class, com ninguém menos que Fergie. O hit número um na Billboard possui sample de Glamorous da cantora. Em seguida, Lizzo fez um medley dos single do seu álbum Special, About Damn Time e 2 Be Loved (I Am Ready).
Anitta apresentou Envolver e J Balvin se juntou ao o colombiano Ryan Castro para uma performance de Nivel de Perro. Bad Bunny apareceu no VMA 2022 diretamente de Nova York com sua turnê World’s Hottest Tour para apresentar uma canção do álbum Un Verano Sin Ti. Os vencedores do Global Icon Award, o Red Hot Chili Peppers também cantaram um medley na premiação.
As meninas do Blackpink apareceram pela primeira vez no VMA 2022 com a performance inédita de Pink Venom, do novo álbum Born Pink, que tem seu lançamento marcado para 16 de setembro. Nicki Minaj apresentou um medley de hits antes de receber o Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Outras performances são de Kane Brown com o single Grand, Eminem e Snoop Dogg com a música From the D 2 the LBC e a parceria de Khalid e Marshmello em Numb. Os italianos do Maneskin cantaram Supermodel, e o Bredon Urie do Panic! at the Disco apresenta Middle of a Breakup.
